Help I’m Not:

Learn from Alan Hirsch—Anytime, Anywhere

Recently, Alan Hirsch spoke in Brisbane, Australia, passionately sharing how APEST is a key component of discipleship. His insights challenge the way we think about leadership and ministry. We wish everyone could experience these teachings in person!

Help! I’m Not an Evangelist!

For over a century, the Church has emphasized the importance of sharing the Good News of Jesus. Sermons, podcasts, books, and various resources have been dedicated to inspiring believers to evangelize. Yet, despite knowing we should share the Gospel and even knowing how to, many of us find ourselves not doing it. There’s a disconnect between our internal motivation and external actions. We think, “I’m simply not an evangelist.”

This feeling intensifies when we observe those who seem naturally gifted in evangelism. They effortlessly build relationships, share Jesus, and witness positive responses. It can feel unfair. However, we’re all called to share the Good News. This isn’t just a task for the few but a foundational aspect of following Jesus. As Alan Hirsch aptly states:

“Every Christian is a sent one. There is no such thing as an unsent Christian.”
— Alan Hirsch

Understanding APEST

The APEST framework, derived from Ephesians 4, outlines five distinct callings: Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Shepherd, and Teacher. Each represents a facet of Jesus’ ministry, and together, they equip the Church for maturity and mission.

Recognizing our primary APEST calling doesn’t exempt us from the others. Instead, it provides a unique lens through which we engage in all five functions. Our primary calling becomes the gateway to embodying the full expression of Jesus’ ministry. As Hirsch emphasizes, the Church thrives when every believer activates their unique calling in service of the collective mission.

Integrating Evangelism Through APEST

Here’s how each APEST role can naturally incorporate evangelism:

  • Apostles: As pioneers and strategists, apostles can channel their drive for new frontiers into reaching unreached communities, initiating fresh expressions of the Gospel.
  • Prophets: With their deep connection to God’s heart, prophets can highlight the transformative justice of the Gospel, drawing others through authentic expressions of God’s truth.
  • Shepherds: Their nurturing nature allows them to create safe spaces where individuals experience the love of Christ, leading to organic opportunities to share the Gospel.
  • Teachers: By making complex truths accessible, teachers can elucidate the core message of the Gospel, guiding others to understanding and faith.
  • Evangelists: Naturally inclined to share the Good News, evangelists inspire and equip others, fostering a culture where evangelism is a shared endeavor.

Embracing Our Missional Identity

Evangelism isn’t confined to a specific role; it’s a collective responsibility. By embracing our unique APEST calling, we contribute to a holistic expression of the Church’s mission. As Hirsch notes:

“Evangelism can’t be our focus! We must not stop sharing the good news, but here’s the deal, here’s the wonderful thing, it gets done along the way as you do discipleship.”
— Alan Hirsch

In essence, evangelism is woven into the fabric of discipleship and community life. By living out our calling, we naturally become bearers of the Good News, each in our distinct way.
